Marianne, 71

Where do you currently live?

The Overberg, in South Africa

If your friends were to describe you, what would they say?

Beautiful, kind, compassionate, optimistic, talented, creative, spontaneous and loyal.

What is your favourite quote or saying?

“Stunning!”

What would you say you are most proud of?

I graduated in Home Economics and after 3 years was promoted to lecturer at the University of Durban Westville in Natal.

I obtained an honors degree with the focus on Adult Education and Social Nutrition and Institutional Management which opened many doors of involvement in the community.

After 5 years, I started my own business in the clothing industry.

I designed and manufactured clothing for a local boutique and soon, sold clothes on a national level. Fashion shows and tv interviews exposure helped in the marketing aspect.

In the year 2000, we moved to Cape Town and I got involved in various voluntary work, which led me to form a branch of Afriforum in Hermanus.

The membership expanded and other branches formed in nearby towns.

After 2 years I was a trophy for the best Chairperson on a National level. A very proud moment!

What advice would you give your younger self?

I should have listened to my Mom’s advice not to suntan so much; but I ignored her and now seeing the results!

Secondly, I would advise to start earlier with a good beauty routine.

As Coco Chanel says ” You can be ravishing at 20, charming at 40, and irresistible for the rest of your life!”

What is a goal or dream you still wish to accomplish?

I still want to visit Japan.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel, read only one page” St. Augustine

What are your thoughts on ageing?

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands: one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Speak words of kindness and wisdom. This will only develop through a relationship with the Creator God!

Make the right choices to increase longevity and step into each new decade with vigor and vitality.

Make each moment matter and live life to the full! Reach out to family and friends!

When I turned 70 I had a Victoria’s Secret pajama sleep-over party with my university girlfriends.

What did you enjoy most about The 50 Over 50 Women’s Portrait Campaign? And how did the experience leave you feeling?

I felt special, and my self-confidence was boosted through the lens of Monica. She was professional and for a day, I forgot that I was in my 70s!

Much laughter and fun.

Marianne was invited for a 50 Over 50 Portrait session with her sister-in-law, Theresa.  The day was full of energy…and how we laughed and laughed.

For many women coming to my studio, they can feel quite anxious about having to step in front of the camera.  But my makeup team and I make sure it’s a very calming, and easy-going environment.

Once the first portrait is taken, the nerves subside…and it’s replaced with beautiful moments.

All of my portrait sessions are fully guided, so you don’t have to worry about how to pose.

I will ensure that I get the best and most flattering angles for you, whether you’re curvy, short or tall.
