Hannes, Karin & Neo – Camps Bay Beach Family Session, Cape Town

Hannes, Karin, and their son were on holiday in Cape Town, from Germany.

We met up early in the morning in Camps Bay for a beach photo session, as it’s one of my favourite beaches in Cape Town. The rain stayed away, and we had the most beautiful, gentle light.

Here are three tips for a successful family photo session on the beach, especially when including a baby:

1. Timing is Everything
Choose the right time of day for your beach session. In winter, there’s often more cloud cover, which helps diffuse the light and creates a soft, flattering glow.

This means you can schedule your shoot slightly later in the day without worrying about harsh shadows. Late morning or late afternoon can be ideal, providing a comfortable temperature and beautiful lighting for your photos.

2. Dress in Layers
Winter weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is key to keeping everyone, especially the baby, comfortable. Opt for outfits that can be adjusted as needed. Bring along a blanket/towel and a hat to keep the baby warm.

3. Embrace the Mood
Winter beaches have a unique, serene beauty. Embrace the moody atmosphere and natural elements.

I always encourage families to interact naturally, enjoying playful moments with their child(ren).
