Elzanne, MJ, Emma & Maia
It was many years ago that I first got to meet Elzanne and MJ when I photographed their beautiful wedding. Several years after that, I met with them to do a beach family shoot in Sea Point, when they had their first daughter Emma. Fast forward a few years, and Maia arrived in the world. I met up with them all at Kirstenbosch gardens a few months ago, and their girls are now aged 7 and 2.
Kirstenbosch Gardens is great in the morning when the gardens open at 8 am, as there are so few people there. It’s the perfect location for children to safely run, play and explore, and this makes it an ideal location for a family photo shoot. If you’re not in any rush, you can enjoy a picnic in the gardens after your shoot, or enjoy lunch in the tea room.
We explored the Boomslang bridge and then headed off to Colonel Bird’s Bath. The bath is also known as ‘Lady Anne Barnard’s Bath’, but apparently, that legend is not true. Although I think it has a better ring to it being the latter.
I really value printed photos, and my parents always had photos of me and my siblings up in our home. My home today is filled with photos of friends, family, and travel memories.
There are so many health benefits to both children and adults seeing themselves in print. Children, feel valued and important. A printed photo says “I matter.” It also instills a sense of security, like “look there’s mommy hugging me!”
Elzanne and MJ ordered two large photos of their shoot from me, (see below. I left the protective plastic on to get a quick photo before I bubble wrapped and delivered them). They also ordered a family album that is almost ready at the printers!
I can’t stress enough the importance of printed photos. Many of us, in the digital age, only have photos on a phone or hard drive. If those were to crash, those memories are gone forever.
I am currently fully booked for shoots until August, and then heading off to Europe. I’ll be available for portrait and family shoots from October 2022 again.
