Kim, 54 – The 50 Over 50 Women’s Portrait Campaign
Kim, 54
Where are you from, and where do you currently live?
Born in South Africa, and living here now.
If your friends were to describe you, what would they say?
Compassionate, empathetic and resilient
What is your favourite quote or saying?
“I know I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Psalm 27 vs 13
What would you say you are most proud of?
I have survived the loss of my vision, with all the losses that came with it- loss of independence, loss of ability to drive, loss of medical practice etc.
With Jessie, my guide dog, I have emerged confident and thriving- we do everything together including flying and cruising. My life is full of the love and laughter of friends and family.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Everything passes- no one stays constipated forever! Life is an amazing rollercoaster – enjoy the ride!
What is a goal or dream you still wish to accomplish?
Next year I am doing my Diploma in Palliative Care at UCT.
What are your thoughts on ageing?
Getting old is a privilege not everyone gets to experience.
What did you enjoy most about The 50 Over 50 Women’s Portrait Campaign? And how did the experience leave you feeling?
I have never thought of myself as beautiful: pragmatic, compassionate, intelligent but plain. Today made me feel beautiful.
I was blessed to have 2 beautiful daughters with me sharing the experience.
Hair and makeup artist, Donna and I had such a great time in studio with Kim, her daughters Sierra and Marian, and Kim’s guide dog, Jessie. It was a buzz of activity, and everyone was exhausted by the end of the session.
Beautiful memories made, and portraits to treasure a lifetime.
Kim has a warmth, gentleness, and strong presence about her that both Donna and I admire.
We feel blessed to have shared this experience. Thank you Kim!
